Immediate Function & Immediate Implants : Functional & Aesthetic Teeth In One TreatmentSession Immediate Function Historically, dental implants havebeen associated with a time consuming surgical procedure. Dental implantsolutions have revolutionised this, by providing beautiful, natural lookingteeth, from the very moment they are placed. Thebenefits of Immediate Function are: Itis now possible to go from suffering from tooth loss to having functional andesthetic teeth in one treatment session. Theprocedure is clinically documented by several independent studies, covering alloral regions, showing high success rates. The single most important factor forthe success is the unique implant surface found in dental implants (eg., TiUnite® of Biocare dentalimplants.) Someimplants contains a biomaterial with better ability tomaintain primary stability while shortening healing times. It enhances the rateof osseointegration, which supports ImmediateFunction™ and makes it possible for a wider range of indications. Inmy opinion, the new and unique grooved threads in Nobel Biocaredental implants may also greatly enhance the effectiveness of treatment. ImmediateFunction may be applied in various clinical situations on a case-by-case basis:
Inaddition, the procedure may also be applied in situations requiring teethremoval and immediate implantation. Immediate DentalImplants Apatient presenting with a fractured or decayed tooth/ root that needs to beextracted can opt to have a dental implant placed at the time of the toothextraction. However, if there is infection associated with the fractured ordecayed tooth, immediate dental implant placement is not advisable. Dentalimplants inserted in fresh tooth sockets just or immediately after toothextraction are called 'immediate' implants. 'Immediate-delayed' implants arethose implants placed after weeks up to about a couple of months to allow forsoft and hard tissue healing. 'Delayed' implants are those placed thereafter inpartially or completely healed bone. Thebiologic healing response after tooth extraction is resorptivein nature. The resultant decrease in alveolar ridge volume and a deformation ofalveolar ridge contour will preclude optimum implant placement and restorativeaesthetics. Byoffering immediate implants on a case-by-case basis, we can avoid situationswhereby extensive soft and hard tissue grafting is required prior to implantplacement. This translates into less surgery, less trauma and less cost to thepatient. The obviousadvantages of immediate implants are that treatment time can be shortened andthat bone height might be maintained thus possibly improving the aestheticresults. This is especially critical in the anterior aesthetic zone of themouth. Immediate implant placement atthe time of extraction of a non-infected tooth can shorten overall treatmenttime by 2 to 6 months. Anew dental implant system is planned for release soon and may be able toenhance the effectiveness of immediate dental implantation. Advantages of immediate implants Theconcept of “Less is More” is patient-centricsimplification and aims to simplify treatment for the patient seeking dentalimplant treatment. Less surgery means lesser time spent on treatment andfollow-up visits, thus leading to less extensive and less expensive treatment. All these would in turn translate to more affordable implant therapy, morepatient acceptance and more treatment satisfaction. To offer immediate dentalimplants in daily implant practice is patient-centric simplification therapy. In summary, the advantages ofimmediate implants include:
( No edentulous period if ImmediateFunction is applied )
( Especially critical in anterioraesthetic zone ) Althoughimmediate implantation is more demanding both surgically and prosthetically compared to the conventional placementtechnique, the advantages make it very appealing to patients who are in need ofboth extractions and implant therapy.
