Blockage can be unilateral or bilateral. Common causes include septal deviation, enlarged turbinates (from nasal allergy or sinusitis), nasal polyps, large adenoids and tumor growth. Treatment depends on the cause. If conservative managements fails to resolve the symptoms, surgical removal of the obstruction can restore nasal patency.

Surgical options include septoplasty (septal deviation), inferior turbinate reduction (hypertrophic turbinates), functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) (sinusitis), adenoidectomy (large adenoids).
